Are you sure you know what you’re doing before getting your tan on?
Today I’m going to show you exactly what to do before you tan. Trust me when I say that most girls don’t do what I’m about to tell you. And it doesn’t matter if you’re using a sunless lotion, getting a spray tan, or heading down to the beach or salon. This technique will enable you to keep your tan for much longer!
Do you ever wonder why places like our knees and elbows tend show up darker than the rest of our bodies?
The reason is because any area that has a lot of dry, dead skin is able to absorb color more easily.
Sounds like dry skin could be a good thing, right?
Dead skin is the first to go and with it, the color that’s been absorbed from your tanner. Our goal is to get the color to where it will last for longer – the younger skin beneath.
The top layer of skin is normally made up of dead cells. It’s this layer that we want to scrub down as much as possible. By thinning out the top layer, we allow our tanner to penetrate past that layer of skin, driving the color further down to where the cells are newer and less likely to shed as quickly.
Now here’s something to keep in mind – we also want our skin free from oil!
Oily skin can result in unsightly streaks and blemishes. Not exactly a good look for us ladies!
So what’s a girl to do? Simple – don’t use ANY products 12 hours before applying your tanner! Many products contain some form of oil that will affect the appearance of your tan.
Instead, this should be your preparation routine…
How To Prepare Your Skin Before Tanning
This is a really simple 3-step process that I use all the time, sun or sunless:
1. 24 hours prior to application use either a loofah or a dry brush and make sure you scrub super hard!
2. Take a shower and wash off the dead skin with water. No soap!
3. Apply a moisturizer.
It’s VERY important to re-supply your skin with moisture. If you don’t apply a moisturizer, your skin will naturally create its own and that is something we definitely don’t want!
By following this routine, I have had lotion applications stay on for 5 – 7 days and spray tans for two weeks! I’ve also DOUBLED the length of my sun and salon tans!
Give it a shot, I promise you will get much better results out of it!
