How To Whiten Your Teeth At Home

Written by 1 comment

We all want our pearly whites to look…well…pearly white, which is why it is so important to take proper care of our teeth.

And while some of our lifestyle choices (such as drinking coffee, tea, and red wine, eating a lot of citrus fruits, and smoking) may affect the colour of our teeth, as we age our teeth naturally yellow.

That’s if we don’t do anything about it.

Well ladies, I’m about to teach you how to do something about it. From home. For cheap. Because I’m in a money-savin’ kinda mood today.

So if you are wanting to whiten your teeth but just don’t want to shell out the big bucks for a pro treatment, or even store-bought whitening strips, then I have just the thing for you. And all you have to do is keep reading…..and buy the ingredients. Yeah, you have to do that too.

How To Whiten Your Teeth At Home The DIY Way

Now before I get to the DIY goodness I’m about to bestow on you lovelies, I thought I would kick some mad knowledge in your ear, so peep this.

As I mentioned above, our teeth naturally yellow with age but we can speed up this yucky yellowing process thanks to the chromogenic agents found in some of our favourite drinks and foods. Hell, even certain antibiotics can yellow your teeth. *thumbs down*

And while we can whiten our teeth at home with the many different whitening toothpastes, strips, whitening creams, and mouthwashes, these whitening products usually contain hydrogen peroxide as their main active ingredient.

Yep. Hydrogen peroxide. The same stuff in that boring brown bottle we clean our cuts with that costs about $3.

So why aren’t more people using hydrogen peroxide to whiten their teeth instead of spending big money on big brands? *sigh* I ask myself the same thing.

Well, starting now you can use this handy DIY trick to learn how to whiten your teeth at home, and save some of your moola.

All you need is a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide and…….that’s it. Just hydrogen peroxide. Now I should mention that it is absolutely imperative that you only buy the 3% hydrogen peroxide as it is deemed safe for oral use. Anything higher than that is deemed unsafe.

To whiten your teeth, simply rinse your mouth with 2 tablespoons (or 30 millilitres) of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 tablespoons of water. Swish it around in your mouth for anywhere from 30 – 60 seconds. While it is in your mouth it will foam. That’s okay, that is how you know it is working.

After your 30 – 60 seconds is up, spit out the hydrogen peroxide (don’t swallow it!), rinse your mouth out with clean water, brush your teeth as you normally would, and try not to eat or drink anything for the next 30 minutes.

What’s great about this handy DIY trick is that it helps to gradually whiten your teeth, it’s safe to use every day, and costs you pennies per treatment.

A Weekly Whitening Trick

While the hydrogen peroxide mouthwash is great for daily use, you can also boost up your whitening once a week with a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda paste.

All you need is your 3% hydrogen peroxide and some baking soda. Then just mix the two together until you have created a paste with a consistency that will stick on your toothbrush.

Even though this paste is great for whitening, it can be a little harsh on your enamel and on your gums, which is why you should only use this paste once a week.

Once you have created your paste, apply some to your toothbrush, or even your finger, and gently scrub your teeth while avoiding the gum line.

Allow the paste to sit on your teeth for 1 – 2 minutes before rinsing with water and brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste to rid your mouth of any remaining hydrogen peroxide.

I should also mention that while both of these treatments are said to be safe for regular use, if you are a little worried about using them on your teeth then you should consult with your dentist. After all, better safe than sorry.

Now go embrace your inner DIY diva and start working your way towards your own cover girl-quality smile!

I have been using just the luster toothpaste for a week or so regular use and have noticed a big difference. I highly recommend it.
