How To Tan Your Face The Right Way

How to tan your faceLooking to find out how to tan your face without either:

  1. Burning it to a crisp?
  2. Making you look like an umpa lumpa?

Well I’m going to show you how to tan your face the RIGHT way! And the best news is, it doesn’t matter if you’re looking to do it via the sun/salon or using a sunless tanner.

I got the know-how for both!

How To Tan Your Face In The Sun Or Salon

This procedure is pretty straightforward but I’ll explain why it’s so important.

Step One: Exfoliate!

Yep I know I harp on about this a lot but it’s extra important to make sure you exfoliate your face before going in the sun. By clearing out dead skin from your pores, you’re allowing the UVB rays from the sun to penetrate deep enough into your skin. This helps you produce the melanin necessary for your tan to appear.

Anything blocking access to the epidermis where melanin is produced, may interfere with the tanning process.

Step Two: Don’t Wear Makeup

Yeah, yeah I know you want to look good for the boys down on the beach, but you’ll seriously be hindering your chances of tanning your face. Most makeup products contain hard to break down chemicals. It’s these chemicals that can prevent UV rays from entering your skin and producing melanin.

Step Three: 5-10 Minutes MAX!

For most of us the skin on our face is by far the thinnest and therefore the most sensitive. Exposing it to more than 10 minutes of direct sunlight will only cause more harm than good.

Trust me when I say 5-10 minutes of direct sunlight is more than enough.

Step Four: Don’t Use Sunscreen!

Instead, any kind of moisturizer that also has SPF is best. The reason for this is because you want to apply moisture to your skin instantly after exposing it to UV rays.

By quickly delivering moisture to your skin, you’ll ensure the maximum amount of melanin will be produced.

Most girls only need a moisturizer that contains SPF 15 and the one I use is Neutrogena Intensified Day Moisture

If however you’re the kinda person that needs extra protection, I’ve heard good things about Obagi Nu-Derm SPF50

How To Tan Your Face The Sunless Way

I’ve basically perfected what I like to call my “Winter Face Tan”. It involves preparation steps before applying your favorite self tanning lotion.

You’re going to need the following:

  • Cleanser(This is the one I use)
  • Exfoliator(I prefer this more expensive microfoliant but it’s totally up to you)
  • Toner(I LOVE this product)
  • Any facial moisturizer(St. Ives works best on my skin)
  • Self tanner(This is what I prefer to use on my face)
  • Washcloth
  • Cotton balls

To get the perfect sunless tan for your face, just follow this process that I use…

Step One: Pull your hair back into a tight ponytail. This is obviously going to keep the tanner out of your hair.

Step Two: Apply your cleanser and wash off using lukewarm water to remove any unwanted dirt or makeup. I prefer to use a washcloth as it allows you to really scrub away any material caught in your pores!

Step Three: With your fingers, use your exfoliator to to clear out any dead skin and dirt from deep within your pores. This is going to make it a lot easier for the tanner to soak further into your skin.

Step Four:  Pat your face dry and apply your toner using a cotton ball. Make sure you wipe all over your face.

Step Five: Wait for your skin to fully dry before applying your tanning lotion. Always use a circular motion when applying as this movement perfectly matches the contours of your face. I promise your tan will look a lot more even if you do.

Step Six: The final step is to take your moisturizer and apply to your neckline, mixing it in with the tanning lotion. This is going to remove any tan line, blending in the color of the self tanner with your natural skin tone.

Those two techniques make up my year round ritual for when it comes to keeping my face glowing the way I like.
