If I’m anything it’s a self-proclaimed DIY’in diva! I just love finding new ways to ease my dependancy on store-bought products and save my dolla dolla billz…so I can then go buy myself something pretty.
I mean, come on, just because I love to DIY doesn’t mean I don’t love raiding the shops!
Recently, I stumbled onto yet another way to not only green my beauty routine, but to save money while still doing something good for my body.
Introducing a fan-freakin-tastic quick and easy natural deo(dorant) to mask nasty smelling B.O.
I was attempting a clever rhyme there…did it work?
Curious to know why I make my own deodorant, and more importantly, how to make your own deodorant? Good. Keep reading.
Why I’m Giving Up Store-Bought Deodorant
My reasoning is pretty simple. I’m a pretty big sweater, which from what I hear, is actually a pretty good thing.
You see, sweating is our body’s natural way of cooling itself down and releasing toxins from our body. It just so happens that this process can get a little smelly, causing us to want to hide that smell.
But when we lather on an antiperspirant to mask the scent, we are actually infusing damage-causing aluminum into our body. And while, it may not cause problems if you use it every so often, if you are a dedicated user of deodorant and antiperspirant the amount of aluminum you are applying to your skin can be cause for concern.
Simply put, aluminum has been linked to conditions such as Alzheimers and Breast Cancer and if you are like me, you just want to reduce your chances, especially if either of those conditions run in your family as it does mine.
Well, there is my reasoning. A pretty good one I think, and one I am happy to have made because it forced me to find one hell of a badass DIY recipe on how to make your own deodorant.
So let’s get into it.
How To Make Your Own Deodorant
What makes this recipe oh-so-awesome is not just what it does for your body, but how incredibly simple it is to make, ultimately removing any excuse you could create not to make it.
All you need is:
- 1/4 cup of Baking Soda
- 1/4 cup of Arrowroot powder or Cornstarch (whichever one you prefer)
- 6 tablespoons (or 90 ml) of Coconut Oil
- a few drops of your favourite essential oil – I like Lavender, Rosewater, Vanilla, or Tea Tree
Once you gather all of your ingredients together, simply:
- mix your Baking Soda and Arrowroot (or Cornstarch) in a small bowl
- once that is properly combined, stir in your Coconut Oil using a fork to mash it all together
- stir in a couple drops of your chosen essential oil and continue to stir until smooth
- scoop your mixture into a clean and dry glass mason jar for easy storage
- slather onto your armpits, allow it to dry, go about your regular routine
Not only will you save yourself heaps of money, but you will be cutting down on your harmful chemical intake, while also smelling fresh as a daisy and possibly even sweating less – a very unexpected yet delightful surprise I must say!
