It’s that week during the month we all dread. And yes, I’m making that general of a statement because I do not know one woman who actually enjoys getting her period.
I mean with all the bloating, the cravings, the cramps, and the general moodiness what’s to like? Compound that with just feeling ugly during that dreaded week and you have got yourself a reason to take action and do something about it.
So how do we ladies surf the crimson wave without wanting to punch the next person who talks to us in the throat? Read on as I share my 3 simple little tricks on how to deal with your period.
Eat and Drink
Unfortunately this is not a week where you should justify eating and drinking whatever you want. In fact, eating all the salty and sugary goodness you are craving or indulging in that big ol’ glass of vino will probably only make those symptoms more unbearable.
Instead try noshing on as many fruits and veggies as you possibly can. A good dose of Vitamins D and E can help to ease any cramping, while antioxidants found in fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries will help keep your body healthy and in fighting shape.
And don’t think red wine counts as a source of antioxidants, as much as it pains me to say that.
Alternatively, drink lots of milk. I know it’s not nearly as fun as wine but the calcium content helps to maintain muscle tone which is reported to help ease cramping. And don’t forget the H2O – staying hydrated is an absolute must-do during this time.
*sigh* I still wish wine did all of that though.
Work It Out
Personally, when I’m dealing with lady business troubles for a week straight, the last thing I want to do is workout. But it turns out that is exactly what you should be doing. Figures.
Even so much as some simple stretching, a brisk walk, a calming Yoga class or a beginners Pilates session can help ease the cramps and make you feel svelty. And let’s be honest, when that week comes, feeling svelty is something we all covet! Or at least I do.
Crank Up The Heat
Though our periods can make us uber-uncomfortable there are ways to ease the discomfort, without having to resort to the meds. While I have nothing against popping a few pain killers to ease the period pain, some women just aren’t keen on medicating.
Luckily, thanks to my years of being a poor student I have learned that all you need to blast away those cramps is 2 tea towels, a faucet, a plastic bag and a microwave.
Once you have scrounged up materials, making your poor girl’s hot water bag is easy as hell:
- take 1 tea towel and run it under water
- wring out the excess water and fold it twice til you have a nice little rectangle
- throw your damp towel into your plastic bag and pop that bad boy into the microwave
- microwave on high for about 45 seconds
- once hot, take the bag out, wrap it in your second tea towel, lay down and place it over the area where your cramps are the worst
- give it a minute or two to work its magic and in no time you should notice your cramps subsiding
Boom! Your own little heating pad! It may sound a little ghetto but trust me, this sh*t works like a dream, and when we’re all crampy that’s the only thing you care about.
Et voila! 3 simple tricks on how to deal with your period that hardly cost anything but can make all the difference when Flow comes knocking on your…ummm….well….vagina.
