If you are Canadian then you have undoubtedly watched an episode of Degrassi. As an 80’s baby, I was more of a Next Generation audience member than the original.
One of the hunkiest dudes was Peter. He was good girl Darcy’s (played by Shenae Grimes of 90210) boyfriend and in one episode she outs him for having gnarly, jungo breath. Harsh, Darcy. Real harsh.
This is a very roundabout way of getting onto the topic of bad breath (and eventually a homemade mouthwash you can make), but cute boys distract me and this is what happens. Oops!
Getting to the point, bad breath can really kill a sexytime mood, or any mood for that matter. Some of us brush our teeth religiously, but still have bad breath. Why? Let’s find out.
What Causes Persistent Bad Breath?
Your breath can be influenced by foods you eat and lifestyle choices. Even with regular brushing, these things can still wreak havoc in your mouth.
When you eat food it begins to break down the moment you put it in your mouth. As it is further digested, it becomes absorbed into the bloodstream and with time, enters your lungs and is given off with every breath.
Pungent-scented foods like garlic, onions are obvious foods to avoid, but fruits like oranges and pineapples are just as bad. The acid content in these fruits helps bread bad breath bacteria. Who knew?
As for lifestyle choices, it’s no secret that smoking or chewing tobacco can leave you with stinky mouth. Habits like these can do more than make you smell though. They can cause you to lose your sense of taste, stain your teeth and irritate your gums. Yowza!
The Truth Behind Mainstream Mouthwash
It seems fairly obvious that avoiding the aforementioned foods and lifestyle choices should help prevent the problem. Coupled with some regular flossing and brushing you should be good to go, but what about mouthwash?
Were you aware that most store-bought mouthwashes contained inactive ingredients like alcohol, poloxamer 407, sodium saccharin, sorbitol and faux-flavoring?
Furthermore, were you also aware that these “inactive ingredients” were cancer-causing, natural flora altering additives? You may want to think twice before swishing around that cap full of minty fresh now! *starts to tremble in her oh-so-cute open-toe platforms*
Make Your Own Homemade Mouthwash
Since we’re not down with cancer-causing mouthwash, why not make our own homemade mouthwash?
This antibacterial, homemade blend will cost peanuts and I bet you dollars to donuts you’ll like it better than your regular spit wash!
For minty fresh breath you will need to collect:
- 1 cup Aloe Vera Juice
- 1/2 cup Filtered Water
- 1 tablespoon Witch Hazel
- 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
- 20 drops Peppermint or Spearmint Essential Oil
The process is super quick. Just mix it all together, pour in a resealable bottle and you are good to go. Simple, right?
Your homemade mouthwash will taste different than conventional brands, but think of it as the taste of safety. You won’t have to worry about mouth altering, cancerous ingredients and you’ll have impeccably fresh breath. You like? I like!
