Not too long ago I underwent a little surgery. Two weeks prior my doctor informed me that I was no longer allowed to shave. Oh yes, you heard that right. No shaving of the legs, underarms, bikini line; nada! Apparently shaving puts you at risk of infection which is a no-no before surgery.
I think it’s important that you know I’m not a very hairy individual. After two weeks of no hair removal, even the best of us become as soft as a puppy’s leg.
During this pre-op phase I was commissioned to write a post on the different types of hair removal and it got me thinking. If you can hit up the salon or purchase so many different hair removal products, there must be a homemade remedy. Turns out there are several so let the sharing begin!
The Two Greatest DIY Hair Removal Tricks
Sweet As Sugar
Sugaring is a hair removal method that began in the ancient Middle East. It is an all natural paste that tackles hair at the root. The ingredients are simple and the process is even more so.
All you will need is the following:
- 1 cup of granulated white sugar
- 1/4 cup of honey – I prefer local honey because it reduces the chance of an allergic reaction
- Half a freshly squeezed large lemon
To mix this natural paste is easy-peasy.
Step 1: Combine your white sugar and freshly squeezed lemon juice in a clean microwave-safe bowl. Keep stirring as you slowly add in your honey.
Step 2: Place your mixture in the microwave and heat on high for 3 minutes. If you are a hippy dippy like me and don’t like using microwaves, feel free to heat up your blend on the stove.
Step 3: Allow your paste some time to cool down before using. You don’t want to burn your skin by applying it too quickly.
Before slathering on your hairy areas, dust some cornstarch over your skin. Once sufficiently dusted, apply the paste and cover it with a cotton strip. Press down firmly on the strip then tear off quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth.
One Quick Sugaring Tip: This method of hair removal can be pretty painless if you work in sections. The smaller the cotton strip, the easier it is to rip off without tearing the skin. You can also reuse this recipe. Isn’t that great?
I find that some of the tastiest recipes contain two ingredients; sugar and eggs. Not just the foundation for baking up a storm, these two items are also effective at removing hair.
Gentle enough for your face, but just potent on your leg and underarm hair, gather together the following:
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon cornflour
Step 1: In a clean bowl, blend together all of your ingredients. They should form a sticky paste.
Step 2: On clean skin, apply a thick layer to your hairy zones. Let the paste fully dry then peel it off and say so long to your long leg locks!
This recipe is measured for removing hair from smaller areas like your face, so double or triple it depending on what body part you’re using it on.
What’s really great about this remedy is how awesome it is for your skin. The combination of enzymes in egg whites and exfoliating power of sugar gives your face a beautiful glow!
So to all you scary hairy wonders, give one of these DIY hair removal methods a try. I think you’ll be shockingly surprised at how well these natural recipes work.
